Erie Canal, August 22 - 26, 2004, is now
complete. Enjoy the picture journey and the WOW experience of tour
members.
This
unique adventure at 8 mph took us from Albany, NY almost to Syracuse,
through 23 locks, a cruise of approximately 160 miles. Our cruise boat,
Emita II, powered by a 300 horsepower engine (not by mules named “Sal” as in
the Erie Canal song), has two decks, one for dining and lounge activity, the
other an open deck with chairs and umbrella tables – a good place to feel
the breeze. Dining is onboard, sleeping is in motels at shore towns along
the way. Captain Dan, 18 years a canaller points out interesting places
along the way; he invites us to visit him in the wheelhouse.
Emita II, our home for several days. Captain Dan gives announcements
and instructions from the wheelhouse. He has a great crew. Captain
Dan shows us an old section of the Erie Canal.
The Erie Canal was the most important transportation system in North America
in the first half of the 1800s.
Getting our instructions of how a lock works, either to lift the boat to the
next higher river/canal level or lower the boat to the level below.
...entering the lock
...lock gates close behind us.
... tie up
the boat...
...wait for the water to enter/or leave the lock for our boat to move to
the next level...
...so our happy group
can be on their way.
The crew does duty on top deck as well in kitchen galley with meal
preparation.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served as we travel -- great food.
On Board -- a time to
relax and enjoy the breeze.
...and finally saying Good Bye to our Captain and Crew.
